Statement on Charlottesville

One thing is clear.

We are in solidarity with those in Charlottesville, Va. and throughout the country that continue the march toward justice for Black lives against white supremacy and racism. Whether Black, immigrant, Indigenous, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, Two-Spirit, Jewish or Muslim, PFund Foundation knows that the liberations of all marginalized people are inextricably linked. We are called to show up and bear witness for one another in the face of such extreme hatred and violence.

As the LGBTQ+ community foundation for the upper Midwest, we know – all too well – how threats, intimidation and attacks terrorize whole communities. It can be tempting to call for compromise in moments like these and dismiss acts like these as isolated incidents because recognizing the pervasive undercurrent of white supremacy in this nation is both embarrassing and hard to stomach.

As Minnesotans, we know what it’s like to have our community in the news for all the wrong reasons – attacks and injustice targeting our neighbors of color.

As members of the LGBTQ+ and allied communities, we too have been forced to be resilient survivors of violence. This year has already been identified by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs as more deadly for LGBTQ people than 2016 in the U.S. We continue to hold and uplift our Black, immigrant, Indigenous, Jewish and Muslim family, friends and neighbors as we advance our vision for a fair, equitable and inclusive path to liberation.

We are committed to a racial and reparative justice approach in philanthropy. We stand alongside the work of those who work to dismantle oppression at every level for every human being. We acknowledge how important it will continue to be to build and deepen relationships so that we can continue to learn and understand the lived experiences of the communities we love.

In solidarity,
